Celebrating Creativity and Sustainability: The Story of Waste Yarn Project

In a world often driven by fast fashion and excess, Waste Yarn Project (WYP) stands as a beacon of ingenuity, sustainability, and creativity. Founded by longtime colleagues and friends Siri Johansen and Sebastien, WYP reimagines what knitwear can be by transforming surplus yarns into extraordinary, one-of-a-kind pieces. At its core, the project is a response to the challenges of overproduction and waste in the knitwear industry, turning discarded materials into opportunities for meaningful design.

FROM WASTE TO WONDER

“Waste yarn” refers to surplus yarns left behind during the knitting process—threads that typically accumulate on factory floors or are discarded because they are too limited in quantity for larger production runs. But for Siri and Seb, this so-called waste was a hidden treasure. Rather than seeing these yarns as unusable leftovers, they envisioned them as the foundation for something entirely unique.

Their process begins with these remnants, meticulously sorted by color, material, and ply. The journey from waste to wearable art is guided by WYP’s signature tool: the Wheel of Fortune. This custom-designed color wheel, developed over the course of a year, introduces an element of controlled randomness, spinning yarn combinations into cohesive designs. Guided by WYP’s own color theory, the wheel ensures that the resulting pieces are always harmonious in both texture and tone, while still celebrating the beauty of chance.

THE MAGIC BEHIND EVERY KNIT

Each WYP knit is handcrafted, taking around twelve hours to complete. Artisans work slowly and methodically, ensuring both quality and durability. The garments pass through the hands of two to three artisans from start to finish, embodying a spirit of thoughtful production.

The resulting knitwear pieces are numbered to reflect their uniqueness—no two are ever alike. Siri, WYP’s co-founder and designer, captures this beautifully:“I’ve always had a love for the waste yarn—the way the color of the random threads often clash so perfectly with the main knit. This element of the unfamiliar, strange and intriguing, is hard to consciously design. It can only really happen by chance.”

MEET THE FOUNDERS

Siri Johansen and Sebastien bring together a rare combination of design mastery and manufacturing expertise. Siri, a seasoned designer with over a decade of experience, has a deep appreciation for knitwear craftsmanship, while Seb’s background in production innovation provides the foundation for WYP’s groundbreaking methods. Together, they have lived and worked in seven countries, sharing a global perspective that informs their work. Now based in France—Siri in Paris and Seb in Marseille—they continue to push the boundaries of sustainable fashion.

A PROCESS OF PURPOSE

Beyond aesthetics, WYP’s mission is rooted in intentionality. By focusing on what’s already available, they create a production process that minimizes waste and maximizes creativity. Each piece is made to last, ensuring that the knitwear is not only beautiful but durable. And for those who care for their garments thoughtfully, WYP pieces are designed to be cherished for years, becoming timeless treasures that can even be passed down to future generations.

WHY WASTE YARN PROJECT MATTERS

In an industry that often prioritizes speed and profit over sustainability, Waste Yarn Project offers a refreshing alternative. By placing chance, craftsmanship, and resourcefulness at the heart of their process, they’ve turned discarded yarns into a symbol of innovation and care.Whether you’re drawn to WYP for their stunning designs or their commitment to sustainability, wearing a WYP piece means more than just owning a garment—it’s a celebration of creativity, purpose, and the unexpected beauty of imperfection.
