This comprehensive volume celebrates three decades of the groundbreaking work of Pacita Abad, a visionary artist whose practice transcended geographic and cultural boundaries. Published in conjunction with her first-ever retrospective, the book features new essays by Julia Bryan-Wilson, Ruba Katrib, Nancy Lim, Matthew Villar Miranda, Victoria Sung, and Xiaoyu Weng, along with an edited oral history compiled by Pio Abad and Victoria Sung. The publication also includes never-before-seen artworks and archival materials, offering fresh insight into Abad’s multifaceted career.

Abad’s art is a testament to her transcultural worldview. Constantly on the move—living and working in the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, the United States, and numerous other countries—Abad drew inspiration from the diverse artistic traditions she encountered. Her innovative “trapunto” painting technique, derived from the Italian word trapungere (“to embroider”), involved stitching and stuffing painted canvases instead of stretching them on a frame. This unique method reflects her nomadic lifestyle, while also honoring global textile traditions and elevating forms of female, non-Western labor that have long been marginalized as mere craft.

From vibrant trapunto canvases to her broader explorations of global art practices, Abad’s work remains ahead of its time, offering a dynamic, hybrid perspective on art, culture, and identity. This retrospective volume not only honors her legacy but also underscores her contributions to a more inclusive and interconnected art world.
